But the people of Hong Kong were able to make a turn-around every time in adversity. We survived because we were determined and had never given up hope. In the face of SARS the new disease and the consequential discrimination overseas, we have to unify once again to fight the odds. And our future will continue to blossom.

The film since then has been hailed as a cult masterpiece and has shot Aronofsky to the status of a major Hollywood filmmaker.

Mad Mad Mad Sword (1969)
Director: Wang Tian Lin
Cast: Tian Qing, Qin Yun, Zhu Mu, Meng Li, Jiang Shan

Synopsis
In sharp contrast with the conventional heroes of integrity, prowess and masculinity, the one in Mad Mad Mad Sword is a common man with numerous weaknesses and a complete worthless student of a prestigious school. To the surprise of all, however, he manages to defeat a string of renowned swordsmen, including the one-armed swordsman and the blind swordsman, by tricks and luck. A hilarious parody of the martial arts genre which was hugely popular during the late 1960s, the film makes one recall the Spaghetti Westerns of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, or such spoofs as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks, all of which, nonetheless, were made in the mid-Seventies. Directed by the prolific Wang Tianlin (father of Wong Jing), it’s both surprisingly inspiring and highly entertaining.

Father Takes A Bride (1963)
Director: Wang Tian Lin
Cast: Lucilla Yu (You Min), Wang Yin, Kelly Lai (Lei Zhen), Wang Lai, Deng Xiao Yu, Deng Xiao Zhou

Synopsis
International Screen, the official magazine of Cathay Organization, has this to describe Father Takes a Bride: ‘“What is a home without a mother” is perhaps the main theme of MP & GI’s latest drama, Father Takes a Bride, which stars Lucilla You Min as the daughter of a widower who plans to remarry. Fearing that her two younger brothers would suffer under a step-mother, Lucilla is determined to “save” them.’ Most probably another star vehicle for Lucilla after her success in playing a young adult daughter in Her Tender Heart in 1959, Father reverses the plot of the former film by having Lucilla rebel against her father instead of the mother. Written by renowned novelist Eileen Chang, who contributes to the film a subtlety rarely found in the Hongkong cinema, the film is also remarkable for its exquisite set designs and a memorable score by the Japanese composer, R. Hitori.

Forever Yours (1960)
Director: Evan Yang (Yi Wen)
Cast: Grace Chang (Ge Lan), Kelly Lai (Lei Zhen), Wang Lai, Liu En Jia, Wu Jia Xiang

Synopsis
Fans of Grace Chang can hardly afford to miss her marvellous performance in Forever Yours, the only film, believe it or not, in which she doesn’t have to display her skill in songs and dance but instead, touches the hearts of her audience by her straight acting. She plays a strong-willed woman whose overwhelming love gives her husband hope and courage to combat with death. Shot on location completely (a rarity in the Hong Kong cinema of the time), the film is also arguably the masterpiece of Yi Wen (Evan Yang), the prolific director known for melodrama and comedy.
