Better Tomorrow 3, A (1989)
WA
D-DVD 2115
No Region Coding.

Running Time: 124 minutes. Even though the DVD has a running time of 124 minutes, it does contain the 130 minute version of A Better Tomorrow 3, commonly referred to as the "long version". WA used a PAL master so the film is slightly sped up. If it had been from a NTSC master, the running time of the DVD would have been 130 minutes.

Good transfer. The print used has minor wear. The print is in much better condition than the one used for the Taiwanese Long Shong video. That print had a lot of wear and was badly damaged in some scenes. Also, the bottom and top mattes kept on moving up and down during the film.

Also, the print used for WA's DVD might be the print used to make the Hong Kong version. At the start and end of each of the additional scenes, there are white marks on the print (see the screenshot below).

Examples Of The Markings
 StartEnd
138.0238.31
243.0043.18
359.2559.54
461.5262.08
566.1866.51

It seems whoever edited the Hong Kong version used the white marks on the print to determine what scenes should be cut from the film.

While the marking makes it easy to identify what scenes got cut for the Hong Kong version, some people might find the marking annoying even though it only lasts for about a 1/2 second.

Letterboxed at 1.85:1. Not enhanced for 16x9 TVs. The framing is much improved over the Taiwanese Long Shong video.

Languages:
  • Mandarin (DD 5.1)
  • As far as I know, no Cantonese language track exists for the long version. It has only been released with a Mandarin dub (Taiwanese Long Shong video) and an English dub (French HK Video video).
  • Subtitles:
  • Removable English and Chinese (Simplified) subtitles
  • Both lines of subtitles appear on the picture.
  • The subtitles are identical to the subtitles on the Taiwanese Long Shong video. WA added subtitles for a few signs that didn't have English subtitles on the Taiwanese Long Shong video.
  • Anita Mui's song is subtitled both times it appears in the film.
  • Extra Scenes
Here are some (but not all) of the extra scenes. As mentioned above, the extra scenes on the DVD are clearly marked so it is easy to identify them.

     ScenesScreenshot
1While Kit and Mark are talking, a drunk gets robbed on the street below (at 38.02 on the WA DVD).
2Mark and Mun (with guitar in hand) have a discussion about Kit on the hood of a car (at 51.10 on the WA DVD).
3Mun tells Ling that she needs to leave Hong Kong (at 75.47 on the WA DVD).

    WA Vs. Long Shong
There are two slight differences between the Chinese WA DVD and the Taiwanese Long Shong video. Both contain the long version of A Better Tomorrow 3.

     DifferencesLong Shong videoWA DVD
1When Anita Mui's song plays the first time, the footage shown is different for about 8 seconds. On the Long Shong video, Mun kisses Kit's hand and takes off his hat.

On the WA DVD, various military/political scenes are shown (33.13 - 33.21 on the WA DVD).

2Pat yells "Mun!" after the tank fires at Mun. One second of dialogue. This line of dialogue is missing on the WA DVD. It should occur at 113.25 on the WA DVD.

As usual for WA releases, the menu is only in Chinese. It has three options: Start The Film, Scene Selection, and Language/Subtitle Selection. The DVD has no extras.

If you want to see the long version, get the WA DVD. It's easily the best presentation of the long version even though one second of dialogue is cut.
