Fastest Sword, The (1968)
Director: Pan Lei
Cast: Chu Ching, Lu Ping
Genre: Martial Arts

Synopsis
Pan Lei both wrote and directed this Chinese variation of The Gunfighter, Henry King's famous 1950 film about a persecuted fast-draw expert. Naturally, here, there's no pistols, only blades, as a great "swordfighter" learns humility after he is defeated by a master martial arts monk. But his reputation always precedes him, leading to danger, destruction, challenges, cruelty, kidnapping, and killing. Pan Lei would also go on to a certain "new wave" fame, as the writer of two of Jackie Chan's earliest starring roles: New Fist Of Fury and Spiritual Kung Fu.

Chen Kuan-tai exuded incredible power on screen, which his directors used to great advantage in this fight-filled follow-up to the smash hit The Boxer Fom Shantung. All the lead character did was win some money gambling with a Shanghai gangleader's playboy son, but that's enough for the father and child to want obsessive revenge. It all culminates in an incredible climatic fight, choreographed by the legendary Liu Chia-liang and Chen Chuan, co-star of Bruce Lee's Fist Of Fury.
  • Letterboxed and 16x9 enhanced
  • Mandarin (DD 5.1)

Director: Ho Meng-hua
