Record Of A Tenement Gentleman, The (1947) Director: Yasujiro Ozu Cast: Chouko Iida, Hohi Aoki, Eitaro Ozawa, Mitsuko Yoshikawa Synopsis Ozu returns to the downtown milieu of his Kihachi films for this Occupation-set tribute to loving motherhood and the communal spirit. In post-war Japan, a fortune teller has found an abandoned boy in the streets and brings him back to his tenement, but nobody wants to take care of the child for even one night. He thinks that the widowed Otane would be the best person to take care of this homeless boy. However, Otane is reluctant to take care of him. Finally, the boy manages to crack open her hard shells. When the boy runs away in fear of punishment for wetting his bed, she goes on a frantic search. Film scholar David Bordwell once remarked: "If Ozu had made only this seventy-two minute film, he would have to be considered one of the world's great directors."

Fast Fingers (1983) Director: Hsu Hsia Cast: Chien Hsiao-hou, Lo Meng, Tung Piao, Liu Li-ling Genre: Comedy Synopsis Hsu Hsia, a great kung-fu actor himself, both directs and leads a team of four martial arts choreographers for this deft-digited tale of kung-fu pickpockets (including handsome Chien Hsiao-hou) who dodge the top cop ("Venom" muscleman Lo Meng) but run afoul of a killer club owner (king of Shaw Brothers villains Wang Lung-wei). There's assassinations, assignations, and many battles which require both light-fingered larceny as well as two-fisted (and feet) fighting. The result is a fondly remembered, exceptional cult favorite.

Their usual hero, Kuo Chue takes on an amazing dual role and the complications and kung-fu which ensue are wonderful to watch. Even judged by the exceptional standards of the "Venom" films, this one stands out.
